You know you're not an average mom when...

by Rachel Goldberg
1. You collect slings the way Imelda collected shoes.
2. Your eighteen-month-old son lifts up his shirt to nurse his baby dolls.
3. You have lain awake at night debating over two different mei tai styles.
4. When asked what a crib is, your daughter has no idea.
5. Your last three Google searches were "homeschool laws testing," "overnight wool soaker," and "tattoo safety nursing."
5. You wish your baby book had a space for "Baby's First Protest March."
6. Your four-year-old doesn't know what McDonald's is, but she does know who Louis Armstrong was.
7. Your house smells like Nag Champa and your laundry smells like lavender.
8. You buy baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils in bulk, but have not purchased Ajax in years.
9. Your kids help you choose your Manic Panic colors.
10.You proudly display your daughter's drawings of you giving birth.

Welcome to ViaMaterna

ViaMaterna is an online community for Charlotte-area mothers who enjoy intelligent discussion. We are politically progressive, feminist/womanist, pro-choice, non-sectarian, and pro-attachment parenting. We strive to be especially welcoming to mothers who are often marginalized on mainstream websites: mothers of color, young mothers, lesbian mothers, AP mothers, mothers without a lot of money, etc.

You might notice that there is no AP forum here. That is because ViaMaterna is, itself, a pro-AP board. This means that the default perspective here is an AP perspective. While we all have different parenting styles and there is no one AP "litmus test," please understand that arguing against attachment parenting or advocating spanking will not be tolerated here.

You must register to read the forums. Please read the rules below first.

Rules:

1. Respect each other. Disagreements are fine, heated discussions are fine, as long as they remain civil. Avoid personal insults. Please do not write anything in a post that you would not say in a face-to-face conversation.

2. No -isms. No racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, or bigotry of any kind will be tolerated. Period.

3. No spam, and no sales posts except in the sale & swap forum.

These rules may be added to and/or changed as necessary.
